Supervising doctoral candidates

This workshop helps you have a positive and productive working relationship when supervising a doctoral candidate.
Factors for a productive doctoral period and successful completion will be discussed. Useful instruments for supervision will also be presented and analyzed. Building on this foundation, participants will reflect on their own expectations, understanding of their role, and personal strengths and weaknesses as a supervisor. Specific ideas on how to shape and work within the supervisory relationship will be developed based on participants’ previous experiences. The discussion will also include how to handle difficulties and crises.

Content and learning outcomes:
Day 1: Core workshop

  • Phases, goals, and factors for success in the doctoral process
  • Self-understanding as a supervisor
  • Mutual expectations in the supervisory relationship
  • Instruments of doctoral supervision
    • Supervisory instruments for the start of a doctorate
    • Supervisory instruments during the doctorate
    • Supervisory instruments for the end of the doctorate
  • Doctoral supervision as a management responsibility
  • Analysis of strengths and weaknesses as a supervisor

Day 2: Advanced workshop with in-depth practical exercises and discussion of typical examples

  • Selecting qualified and motivated doctoral candidates
  • Productive supervisory meetings and positively shaping the supervisory relationship
  • Supervisory meetings in practice
  • Handling conflict and crises during the doctorate
  • Sharing of experiences and discussion of typical examples to develop solutions
  • Best practice examples

The two workshops are designed to be taken together. However it is possible to only register for one day.  

Methods and approaches: Trainer input, discussion and exchange of experiences, individual exercises, interactive exercises in small groups, case examples, coaching methods. Focus will be placed on participants’ expectations as surveyed before the workshop

Target group: University professors, postdocs, junior research group leaders who are currently supervising or will supervise doctoral candidates or who are involved in the supervision of a doctoral candidate
